What would a deck look like?

Over the summer of 2020, my parents started looking into putting a deck onto the front side of their house. The builder they were working with was asking them lots of question - such as how wide or how long they wanted the deck. As much as measuring out the length of the deck and marking the grass at different lengths can help get a feel for the potential size of the deck, my parents still were unsure which option to go with. In addition, there were lots of colors and materials availble to them, and they needed a good way to visualize how the deck would realistically look.

I knew I could solve this problem with Lidar and Unity. I used my new 2020 iPad Pro with Lidar to scan the entire side of our house, imported the scan into unity, and quickly created a mock up of a deck using primitive shapes. I then applied different materials and colors to their respective parts of the deck. I even included a few pieces of furniture! In just one afternoon, I was about to create a to-scale experience that my parents could not just look at for size and colors, but also virtually "walk" onto.

See the pictures inclded above for the real life deck compared to my model in Unity.
